shrug-l: LiDAR XYZi files

Jim,
I assume that the XYZI file also has a fourth column of data for the
intensity value. I believe that ArcGenerate just ignores the Z value,
so you would only get a 2D point, with no elevation. You would also
lose that fourth column value...

You might try saving your file as a dbf, editing it to give it
appropriate column headings, adding the resultant dbf to ArcMap and then
using the "ADDXY Data" Tool to create a point theme from the tabular
data. (To add the Add XY Data" button to your ArcMap interface go to
Tools, Customize, Commands, Tools, AddXY Data.) This will at least give
you points with preserved Z and Intensity values. You could then
convert them to 3D points if desired. Of course, given that you are
talking about LIDAR data, there might be size issues...

Good luck,

I have succesfully brought Lidar XYZ files into Leica Photogrammetry
Suite (softcopy package). XYZ files are not immediately readable by
ArcInfo, but can be easily made to be. Simply open the file in a text
editor, go to the last record, hit ENTER and add END to the end of the
file and save. It can now be read by Arc Generate. The file will look
like this:

xxxxxxx.xxx yyyyyy.yyy zzz.zzz
xxxxxxx.xxx yyyyyy.yyy zzz.zzz
xxxxxxx.xxx yyyyyy.yyy zzz.zzz
xxxxxxx.xxx yyyyyy.yyy zzz.zzz
END

Good Luck,

Greg

Does anyone have experience dealing with XYZI files from LiDAR scan?
