THIS MONTH: PRESENTATION

TOPIC: Land Surveying and GIS - What is the role of the
Professional Surveyor

SPEAKER: Lonnie Sears, RLS
President
eGPS Solutions, Inc.

DESCRIPTION:

Ever wonder what a Land Surveyor does? How he does it? or Why it is
important? How do land surveyors use and view GIS data? This
presentation will help to answer all those questions and more. Lonnie
will discuss the legal role of Surveyors in boundary location, land
development, and mapping. He will also discuss land surveying methods
and how the land surveyors fit into the GIS puzzle from their
perspective.

Mr. Sears has over 15 years of Geodetic Surveying experience. He started
his surveying career in 1990 as the GPS Project Manager with a national
firm located in the Atlanta area. Since then, he has performed GPS
Control Surveys in six southeastern states and integrated DGPS, RTK and
Static Survey methods into the daily surveying tasks for two additional,
metro Atlanta civil engineering corporations. His background has been
devoted to developing GPS Surveying techniques for GIS inventory
projects, DOT projects, private land development projects, Large
Boundary Surveys, ALTA/ACSM Surveys and Topographic Surveys.

Mr. Sears holds RTK and Post Processed GPS certificates of training from
Ashtech Solutions and Trimble Navigation. First certified as a
Professional Land Surveyor in 1994, he is currently licensed in Georgia,
Alabama, North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee. He is an active member
of the Surveying and Mapping Society of Georgia (SAMSOG) and The Urban
and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA). Prior to a career
in surveying he served in the United States Marine Corps and received a
degree in Civil Engineering and Surveying Technology from the University
of West Virginia's Institute of Technology.
