Hey Shruggers,
Just an FYI about Google Maps for those of you who have interest, i.e.
Mashups, etc.
Hopefully I'm not too far behind the curve on this, but I noticed that
Google "recently" incorporated a new feature in the Florida
area...Statewide Parcels. The parcels are visible at the 8th scale or
higher. When you right-click on a parcel you can choose the option "What
is This?" and it will return the parcel address with a balloon at the
centroid of the parcel, and GPS coordinates in the lower-left of the
app.
I did a little bit of testing and the address data appears to be
consistent with the DOR parcel data, which is where I assume they got it
through some means or another. There are some address inaccuracies here
and there, but nothing that we would not expect. And of course addresses
that are exempt from public record do not appear to be available, i.e.
if no address is present in the attribute field for a specific feature
the app will return a balloon on the closest parcel, not the one
queried.
As for geocoding, it makes sense that if you match a parcel you'll get
the centroid. Otherwise you'll fall back to the
you're-in-the-right-state street data.
Just in case anyone else missed it, like me.
