There are still a couple of seats available in the ArcGIS Desktop 1 and
2 classes I am teaching next week. These are the introductory classes
that teach new ArcGIS users the fundamentals of GIS and basic
functionality of Esri's ArcGIS software. The classes will be held at
Keck & Wood's Training Center located in Duluth Georgia. Both classes
are based on ArcGIS 10. Below are more details about each class.

ArcGIS Desktop 1: Getting to know GIS

March 21-22, 2011

This two-day course provides the foundation for understanding GIS, what
it can do, and how others are using it. Students learn the basic
functions of a GIS and why a GIS database powerful. In course
exercises, students work with ArcMap, an application within ArcGIS
Desktop, to visualize geographic data, create maps, query a GIS
database, perform spatial analysis using common analysis tools, and
solve geographic problems using a systematic approach. Topics covered
during this class include:

* Basic functions of a GIS and real-world applications.

*        Exploring GIS maps: Defining features, layers, and data frames;
Exploring map scale; Understanding the relationship between features and
attributes.

*        Exploring a GIS database: Exploring attribute tables;
Identifying features; Symbolizing features based on their attributes;
Labeling features based on their attributes.

*        Creating map layouts: Understanding data view and layout view;
Using the Layout toolbar; Using map templates; Modifying map elements;
Printing maps.

* Understanding location: Defining coordinate systems and map
projections; Reading and finding location coordinates on a map;
Measuring area and distance on a map.

* Understanding different data formats and types

* Performing basic GIS analysis such as Buffer and Union

ArcGIS Desktop 2: Tools & Functionality

March 23-25, 2011

This three-day course teaches the range of functionality available in
the ArcGIS desktop software and the essential tools for visualizing,
creating, managing, and analyzing geographic data. This hands-on course
uses exercises to emphasize practice with ArcMap and ArcCatalog (the
primary applications included with ArcGIS Desktop software) to perform
common GIS tasks and workflows. The tools for creating and managing
geographic data, displaying data on maps in different ways, and
combining and analyzing data to discover patterns and relationships are
highlighted, and students learn how ArcGIS Desktop provides a complete
GIS software solution. By the end of the course, students will be
prepared to start working with the software on their own. Topics covered
during this class include:

* Investigating geographic data including how it is stored
(Raster & Vector), data formats, managing data in ArcCatalog and viewing
data in ArcMap.

* Managing map layers and navigating in a map (zooming, bookmarks
and scale).

* Symbolizing categorical data, types of symbols, choosing
symbols, creating symbols.

* Symbolizing quantitative data: symbology options, and
classification methods.

* Labeling map features and annotation basics

* Coordinate systems and map projections

* Making a Map: Layouts, adding map elements (Legends, North
Arrows, Scales and so on)

* Basic data editing techniques for spatial and attribute data

* Managing data tables including joins and relates between two or
more tables

* Creating a geodatabase and feature classes

* Geocoding addresses or x,y coordinates

* Common analysis operations such as queries, clipping data,
buffering and overlaying data

*        Customizing the ArcGIS interface
