shrug-l: DEM profile graph with markers

I have a DEM.  On top of the DEM I have a point layer of soil sample
locations for a soil transect (walk downhill collecting samples at
intervals).  I want to create a profile graph that shows where my sample
points are located.  I can create the profile from the DEM by clicking
from sample point to sample point, but my click points don't stand out
as individual points.  I would like to see where the sample points fall
on the profile graph.  Anybody have any ideas how to do this?
