Milla,
I don't have a direct source for loaner GPS units, but have some other
places you might look, plus some teaching resource ideas.
/Orienteering /as a sport appeals to a lot of students. Dovetails nicely
with natural resources and environmental sciences. Perhaps set up an
un-timed, 5 station "event" for your students? Perhaps set the markers
near some notable natural resource "feature" they are to observe?

Recommend that you do NOT run a timed orienteering event in the wild
unless you get full medical releases. Unfortunately inexperienced
youthful exuberance and competitiveness sometimes results in scrapes,
bruises and the occasional twisted ankle.
For really basic instruction, including "map and compass" look no
further than the Boy Scouts. Orienteering Merit Badge (Get the merit
badge book - a great teaching resource! Age appropriate from 11-18 so
very easy/introductory, yet covers quite a bit.)
https://meritbadge.org/wiki/index.php/Orienteering You can "dial it up a
notch" for college students easily. Why "map and compass" (vs. only
GPS)? Residential and commercial building legal descriptions and site
maps are still expressed in "meets and bounds", students should at least
be introduced to both systems. Give them a site map with a mistake in
the "meets and bounds" legal description, the plot map, and actual
physical reality. Find the error using only a compass and your measured
pace.
The local BSA counsel may have loaner GPS units? (or know where they
might be had?) https://www.suwanneeriver.net/
FL Disaster has TONS of resources and many experts inside Leon county.
Orienteering, disaster prep, and/or search and rescue volunteering may
capture the hearts and interest of some of your students, potentially
increasing the motivation to learn GIS.

(you don't need to be registered to cruse through their SUBSTANTIAL
course catalog and pop up information on individual courses. You can
limit to courses taught in Leon county, identify the local teacher
and syllabus. Excellent contacts!
I've come to appreciate that this area has some amazing resources for GIS.
