Erika,
=20
I've done what your'e doing, I've had the problem you're having, and I
think I know the solution:
=20
If you're working with the lat/longs in Excel, you have to make sure
they're formatted as numbers.=20
=20
I know, this sounds really obvious, but it's not. The default value for
columns in Excel is General. General format stores numbers, but ArcGIS
doesn't recognize it as numbers. so...
=20
Select both lat & long columns,=20
right click in the worksheet, select "format cells",
scroll down to "Number", select decimal places, etc.,
save the file (I always used DBF 3, I think)
then GET OUT of excel, because you can't access the file while it's open
=20
... then you should be able to add XYs.
=20
Good luck! Let me us know if that works.

I working on adding data using the XY data tool. I have the file saved
as a CSV and the columns are labeled, but when I add the csv to the tool
