The Maplex does come with ArcInfo automatically. You do have to purchase
it as an extension if you are using ArcView or ArcEditor. I personally,
coming for the CAD world originally, prefer to use Annotation. I like
having the control Annotation allows over labels. However if you are
planning to use labels then I agree Maplex is the way to go.

No - we don't concern ourselves with color exactness here.
Close enough is good enough for us - and thank Heaven for that!
In fact - a lot of our deliverables are in pdf form, so it's up to the
end user's printer. 

The thing that causes us the most stress here is LABELS!
In fact - the comment I made in the Post-Conference Survey to ESRI is
this:


"I was really disappointed and disheartened that so much development has
gone into the core product, and yet Maplex remains a separate extension.
The message of ESRI seems to be COMMUNICATING with maps - and yet - what
could be more BASIC for communicating geographic information than the
LABELS, fer Heaven's sake? All the time and effort to add so much depth
to 9.2 make me think that the ESRI product is like a completely loaded,
state of the art Lexus. You know - complete with tinted windows,
sunroof, seat warmers, GPS, satellite radio, just anything and
everything any driver would want. But I have to pay extra for the
WHEELS. See? "

But - anyway - back to the issue at hand...
No - I wasn't aware of the ArcPress ripper. 
I'll have to look into that..thanks!

Just out of curiosity, and as a Mac user frustrated by Windows' color
handling, how do you (or DO you) get a closer match between color
on-screen and output? I have to maintain a set of map books for each
printer (Canon, Savin, Epson) because output color differs so much
between devices.

As to your question, I just work within the limitations of ArcMap,
constantly reminded of its graphics design weaknesses.
You're probably aware that ArcMap 9.1 (at least) comes with the ArcPress
ripper.

Hello all - I'm requesting your opinions here.

We have a need to manipulate our maps graphically beyond what ArcMap can
do.
(Or - what it can do - software that is specifically for graphics can do
better/faster/more efficiently)

Do  any of the rest of you use something besides an ESRI product to
manipulate your maps?
If so - what?

If you have a graphics program - do you then use any other software,
like the Avenza products - as a "bridge" between the two?
