Kristal,
Lets see if I can answer your questions.

1. Can you tell me if there is a way to identify (view) the coordinate
system of a dataset that is being brought into AutoCAD either by the
"Data: Connect to" or Import tool? It seems that you have to assign a
coordinate system to your map but what if you the data's projection?

If you have a projection assigned to a Shapefile or Coverage you can Map
can reproject the data to another projections using either method. If
you use the Data: Connect you can see the projection originally assigned
to the Shapefile or Coverage in the Data Connect window. This also works
with Personal and SDE Geodatabases. It will not show you the project at
the time you create the connection only after. The import will list the
projection assigned to Shapefiles or Coverages in the Input Coordinate
field shown on the Import Dialog box. The import will not work
Geodatabases.

2. Can shapefiles imported into a drawing in AutoCAD be edited? I was
told that only the "connect to" method would provide read-only access to
data layers that I am sharing.

You can edit shapefiles using the Data: Connect method at least in
theory. You must first check features out. Make the edits then Check
them back in. This also works with SDE geodatabases. It does not work
with Personal or File Geodatabases. It also is not completely stable.
Meaning I would always make sure to be working with a copy of the data
so if something happens you don't loose much.

I have two questions for our CAD experts out there (I am not!).

1) Can you tell me if there is a way to identify
(view) the coordinate system of a dataset that is being brought into
AutoCAD either by the "Data: Connect to" or Import tool? It seems that
you have to assign a coordinate system to your map but what if you the
data's projection?

2) Can shapefiles imported into a drawing in AutoCAD
be edited? I was told that only the "connect to" method would provide
read-only access to data layers that I am sharing.

Thanks all and hope you have had a great start to the New Year! Kristal
