The first one is easy. The TOC is treated like all other windows in ArcGIS
10 (Search, Catalog, Table, Create Features, and so on). To dock it in a
specific location, click on the title area of the window and hold down your
mouse button. You should see blue arrow icons appear in the ArcMap
interface. Drag your mouse pointer while still holding down the button to
the arrow that indicates the general location you want to dock the window.
Once you are on the arrow icon release your mouse button and the window will
dock to that side of the interface. 

 

As to the second question, you want to use symbol levels. Look in the
Symbology Tab in the layer properties. Find and click on the advanced
button. That should get you to the right place. Hope this helps.

Holiday greetings!

 

I have a couple questions and I have not been able to find an answer yet.
The first question is to re-attach the "Table of Contents" back to ArcMap
(using v10.0).  It got detached and is floating around, kind of annoying.

 

The second question is about setting the order of drawing the symbology for
a data layer with multiple symbols.  The drawing order set in the ArcMap
symbology dialog appears to be ignored when the symbols are drawn.   This
forces me to split the individual symbols into layers so that those symbols
will be drawn in the order as specified.  I am not sure if this is by design
or I miss something.
