Good afternoon everyone

The other week Esri released SP 2 for ArcGIS and almost immediately
users began reporting issues after they installed it. One big issue was
a problem opening some mxd files specifically those that had been
created using the Save a Copy command. Esri has released a patch to fix
this issue. You can download it at:

http://resources.arcgis.com/content/patches-and-service-packs?fa=viewPat
ch&PID=17&MetaID=1767

Summary:

This patch addresses a crash in ArcMap when opening or saving certain
map documents in ArcGIS 10.0 Service Pack 2. Any map document that
includes a map surround, and has been saved to version 9.0/9.1 or 8.3
using the "Save a Copy" command can trigger the crash. As there is no
way to know if a document was saved to a previous version, we recommend
that all users install this patch.

Issues Addressed with this Patch:

* NIM067980 - Crash when switching views after opening mxd saved to
9.0/9.1 or 8.3.

Description: Some map documents (MXDs) that worked properly in ArcGIS 10
Service Pack 1 (SP1) or prior cannot be opened or saved after installing
ArcGIS 10 Service Pack 2 (SP2). In cases where the map document opens
successfully, ArcMap may crash when switching between Data View and
Layout View or when working with map surrounds such as Legend, North
Arrow, Scale Bar, and Scale Text.

The crash is triggered by any map document that includes a map surround
and has been saved to version 9.0/9.1 or 8.3 using the "Save a Copy"
command. The affected documents may have had the save to prior version
performed by any version of ArcGIS, not just 10.0 SP2. In many cases, it
may not be obvious which documents have been affected.

If you have any questions or run into issues with the installation,
please contact Esri Technical Support at 1-888-377-4575, option 2, or
visit the Esri Support Site (http://support.esri.com/en/login).

Hope this is useful information. Everyone have a great Memorial Day
weekend and make sure to remember our fallen heroes.
