>There are no glaciers in upper New York State these days
Totally correct. 10,000 years ago (pretty current for such things) all
the ice melted in the Adirondacks, there are no glaciers left in NYS.
The current glaciers, melting at a rate of 600 feet per year, are in
Peru
(http://environment.nationalgeographic.com/environment/global-warming/big-thaw/).
Once you get significant water flow under a huge glacier there is
potential for ice movement. Adirondacks provides an excellent "fairly
current" example of what happens when big ice melts and moves.
Of course after it all settles it's magnificent and pristine,
Adirondacks is well worth a trip if you ever are close (lots of
beautiful rivers, lakes, streams and trees). [Avoid May and June due to
black flies.]
Bill, you were not preaching. Loved hearing about Southern Louisiana and
the Mississippi....never knew! Being in the financial services industry
I remember back a few years when the Mississippi flooding caused huge
grain harvesting / transportation back ups (60% of all US export grain
departs from the Gulf of Mexico). Grain dealers who had purchased grain
forward (to be received from farmers at harvest time) could not get
delivery at harvest, Meanwhile they had promised (sold forward) to
provide grain to bakers, etc. every week, smoothly, with NO
interruptions. Without the planned replenishments they quickly ran out
of silo inventory just before typical harvest times, and started to fail
to make contract physical deliveries. The Federal Reserve banks in those
areas were worried that multiple grain dealer failures (typically
locally owned and financed by local banks) might ignite some unwelcome
stress to the /general banking system/ which was also providing credit
to the area farmers. The national rail system backed up in that area
scrambling to profit from the barges being unusable. East / West rail
shipments having nothing to do with grain were delayed.
Just shows that a little "climate change" can have a real ripple effect
into a financial system which is built with only the thinnest "veneer"
of safety, to maximize short term profits. Of course the Mississippi
floods were only a drop in the bucket compared to anything the size of
the Adirondacks melt.
As GPS moves to economical centimeter accuracy, and self driving autos
start to become popular, I guess you don't want to be going too fast
when you get an unexpected plate shift, and the on-board GPS algorithms
experience their first "taste of chaos."
