Jim,
Census data can be a pain but once you have been through the loop a few
times it becomes much easier.
I personally use QGIS (free / open source) but the following should
easily work with standard ESRI products too.
Get block level census data downloads directly at:
https://factfinder.census.gov
* select "Advanced Search" & press "Show me all"
* select "Geographies", select the radio button "all geographic types"
* Block is 100. The panel will look like this:
* From there you can download table data at the block level.
* To map you may need a block shape file: (Tiger puts these out)
o https://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/geo/shapefiles/index.php?year=2010&layergroup=Blocks
* Join the above data download to the shape file by block.
Note block level data is the most granular level reported, and not much
is reported at that deep a level. Move up to "block group" for much more.
For block level data I strongly recommend you start out the process by
looking at the *actual questionnaire*:
https://www.census.gov/history/pdf/2010questionnaire.pdf That will give
you a very quick read on what is available (obviously, only aggregate
data for the whole block is reported, no personally identifiable
information. Keep in mind too, if there are too few individuals in a
block to risk privacy infringement, they will not report at that level.)
You only get block level data every 10 years because *its not a sample
*- they strive to get information on EVERY person living in that block.
Between decades they only work on samples, report only at the block
group level or greater, and the data is much richer.
