I just caught up on this thread after getting back from Christmas vacation.
One of my biggest complaints is that many files I have received from various
sources are NOT projected at all! (E.g., if you look at the Properties,
Coordinate System window, the Coordinate System is listed as "Unknown").
The data may be in either State Plane Coordinates or Geographical Coordinates
(decimal degrees), but there is no associated projection with the data (e.g.,
the data is a flat sheet). Unless the data comes from a really small area,
it gets distorted no matter how you try to project or reproject it. The only
luck I have sometimes had is where point data in State Plane Coordinates
(either NAD27 or NAD83) was involved and I could run the file through CorpCon
to project it to Lat/Long NAD83-HARN. For some reason this seems to work
when the Project or Reproject commands in the ArcToolbox don't.
What experience (trouble) have other SHRUG List members had with this issue?
